How Penicillin Changed the World

In 1928, Alexander Fleming returned from vacation to find a mold contaminating his petri dish had killed the surrounding bacteria. This accidental discovery led to the antibiotic era. Fleming identified the mold as Penicillium notatum.

It took Howard Florey and Ernst Chain over a decade to develop penicillin into a usable drug. Mass production during World War II saved countless soldiers. The discovery earned Fleming, Florey, and Chain the 1945 Nobel Prize.
