Cabergoline
About Cabergoline
A longer acting dopamine agonist preferred over bromocriptine for prolactinomas. Cabergoline or Dostinex treats prolactin producing pituitary tumors, and its long half life permits infrequent dosing. It is better tolerated than bromocriptine and more effective at shrinking tumors. Cabergoline has been associated with heart valve damage at high doses used in Parkinson disease, but this risk is minimal at the low doses used for prolactinomas. The drug has become the first choice treatment for elevated prolactin levels, often avoiding the need for pituitary surgery.
