About Diazepam

A benzodiazepine discovered by Leo Sternbach at Hoffmann La Roche. Diazepam or Valium was the top selling drug in the US from 1969 to 1982. It treats anxiety, muscle spasms, seizures, and alcohol withdrawal. Diazepam enhances GABA, the brains main inhibitory neurotransmitter. Tolerance and dependence develop with regular use. The Rolling Stones sang about Mothers Little Helper, referencing the dependence on tranquilizers among housewives. Despite risks, diazepam remains important for acute anxiety and seizure emergencies.
