About Hyoscyamine

An anticholinergic medication that relieves smooth muscle spasms. Hyoscyamine or Levsin treats intestinal cramps, irritable bowel syndrome, and bladder spasms. It is derived from plants in the nightshade family including deadly nightshade. Hyoscyamine works by blocking muscarinic receptors in smooth muscle, reducing contractions. Side effects include dry mouth, blurred vision, and constipation, typical of anticholinergic medications. It provides symptomatic relief for functional GI disorders when other treatments are insufficient.
