Developed by Jonas Salk and licensed in 1955, the injected polio vaccine uses killed virus. Albert Sabin later developed an oral live vaccine in 1961. Before vaccination, polio epidemics paralyzed thousands of children each year in the US. Mass vaccination campaigns reduced polio from a global scourge to a few remaining endemic countries. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative has spent billions of dollars. Wild polio cases have fallen dramatically, with wild poliovirus transmission persisting mainly in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
