About Timolol
A beta blocker eye drop that lowers intraocular pressure. Timolol or Timoptic was the first beta blocker approved for glaucoma eye drops. It reduces aqueous humor production. Timolol revolutionized glaucoma treatment when introduced, providing effective pressure reduction without surgery. The drug can be absorbed systemically, causing beta blocker effects including slowed heart rate and breathing problems in susceptible patients. It remains widely used and is on the WHO essential medicines list.
