BCG Vaccine
About BCG Vaccine
The Bacillus Calmette Guerin vaccine against tuberculosis, developed by Albert Calmette and Camille Guerin. BCG is one of the most widely administered vaccines in history, given to around 100 million children each year. It protects children from severe TB including meningitis. Protection against adult pulmonary TB is variable. BCG is given as part of national immunisation schedules, which vary by country, and is widely used in countries with high TB burden. In the US, BCG is rarely used because of low TB rates and because it interferes with TB skin testing. BCG is also used as bladder cancer treatment.
