Diphenhydramine
About Diphenhydramine
A first generation antihistamine marketed as Benadryl. Diphenhydramine treats allergic reactions, hives, and is used as a sleep aid. It crosses the blood brain barrier, causing sedation. The drug is also used for motion sickness and Parkinson symptoms. Diphenhydramine has anticholinergic effects, and chronic use is linked to dementia risk. The Beers Criteria list it as potentially inappropriate for older adults. Despite concerns, it remains one of the most used over the counter antihistamines for acute allergic reactions.
