About Exenatide

The first GLP 1 receptor agonist, derived from the saliva of the Gila monster lizard. Exenatide or Byetta treats type 2 diabetes by stimulating insulin release, slowing digestion, and reducing appetite. The discovery that lizard saliva contained a GLP 1 like molecule was remarkable. Exenatide pioneered the class of injectable diabetes medications that also promote weight loss. The original formulation requires frequent injections. Longer acting extended release formulations were later developed.
