HPV Vaccine
About HPV Vaccine
A vaccine against human papillomavirus, the cause of cervical cancer. HPV vaccines prevent infection with the cancer causing HPV types 16 and 18, which cause 70 percent of cervical cancers. The vaccine is most effective when given before exposure to the virus, and is given as part of national immunisation schedules, which vary by country. HPV vaccination could eliminate cervical cancer as a public health problem. Despite this potential, vaccination rates remain below target in many countries due to cost and cultural barriers.
