About Meningococcal Vaccine

A vaccine against Neisseria meningitidis, a bacteria that causes meningitis and blood infections. Meningococcal disease can kill within hours. Different vaccines protect against the most dangerous serogroups including A, B, C, W, and Y. Vaccination is given as part of national immunisation schedules, which vary by country, and often targets adolescents and groups living in close quarters such as students and military recruits. The disease occurs in the meningitis belt of sub Saharan Africa. Meningococcal vaccination has reduced the disease dramatically in countries with universal programs.
