Pneumococcal Vaccine
About Pneumococcal Vaccine
A vaccine against Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria, which cause pneumonia, meningitis, and blood infections. The original vaccine protected against 14 strains. Modern versions cover 13, 15, 20, or 23 strains. Pneumococcal vaccines are given as part of national immunisation schedules, which vary by country, typically targeting young children, older adults, and people with chronic conditions. Childhood vaccination has dramatically reduced pneumococcal disease including in adults through herd immunity. The vaccine prevents a large number of serious infections and deaths.
