Rabies Vaccine
About Rabies Vaccine
Developed by Louis Pasteur in 1885, the rabies vaccine was the second vaccine developed for humans, after smallpox. Rabies is almost universally fatal once symptoms appear. Post exposure prophylaxis with rabies vaccine and immunoglobulin prevents the disease if given promptly after a bite. Pre exposure vaccination is offered to people at higher risk, such as veterinarians, animal handlers, and some travelers. The vaccine has saved many lives. Pasteur famously first tested it on a boy bitten by a rabid dog.
