About Simvastatin

A statin derived from a fermentation product of Aspergillus terreus. Simvastatin or Zocor treats elevated cholesterol and reduces cardiovascular risk. It became widely available as a low cost generic, dramatically reducing cost. Simvastatin has been prescribed to tens of millions of patients worldwide. It works by inhibiting HMG CoA reductase in the liver. Muscle pain and rarely rhabdomyolysis are potential side effects. Its short half life means dose timing has historically been considered more relevant than for longer acting statins.
