Spironolactone
About Spironolactone
A potassium sparing diuretic that blocks aldosterone receptors. Spironolactone treats heart failure, high blood pressure, and fluid retention. It improves survival in severe heart failure. Spironolactone also blocks androgen receptors, making it useful for acne and hair loss in women. Side effects include breast enlargement in men and menstrual irregularities. Eplerenone is a similar drug with fewer hormonal side effects. It is on the WHO essential medicines list.
