Aspirin
About Aspirin
The original modern drug, synthesized by Felix Hoffmann at Bayer in 1897. Aspirin treats pain, fever, and inflammation. At low doses, it prevents blood clots and reduces heart attack risk. Aspirin works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes, reducing prostaglandin production. Its discovery launched the modern pharmaceutical industry. Aspirin is on the WHO essential medicines list. Despite being over 120 years old, aspirin remains one of the most used medications worldwide with an estimated 50 to 120 billion tablets consumed annually.
