About Clavulanate

A beta lactamase inhibitor that is combined with amoxicillin as Augmentin. Clavulanic acid has no antibiotic activity alone but protects amoxicillin from destruction by bacterial beta lactamase enzymes. This extends amoxicillin activity to bacteria that would otherwise be resistant. The combination is one of the most prescribed antibiotics worldwide. Amoxicillin clavulanate treats sinusitis, ear infections, skin infections, and urinary tract infections. Diarrhea is a common side effect. The combination demonstrates how inhibitor pairing can overcome resistance.
