About Sulbactam

A beta lactamase inhibitor combined with ampicillin as Unasyn. Sulbactam protects ampicillin from bacterial beta lactamase enzymes, extending its spectrum. The combination treats skin infections, intra abdominal infections, and gynecological infections. Sulbactam is given intravenously. It is also combined with cefoperazone as Sulperazon in some countries. Sulbactam has some intrinsic activity against Acinetobacter, a highly resistant hospital pathogen. The combination provides broad coverage for polymicrobial infections.
