About Clozapine

The most effective antipsychotic for treatment resistant schizophrenia. Clozapine or Clozaril was the first atypical antipsychotic. It reduces symptoms in patients who do not respond to other antipsychotics. Clozapine also reduces suicide risk in schizophrenia. However, it can cause agranulocytosis, a dangerous drop in white blood cells, requiring regular blood count monitoring. Despite this burden, clozapine remains underused. Many schizophrenia patients could benefit from clozapine but never receive a trial of it.
