About Olanzapine

An atypical antipsychotic marketed as Zyprexa. Olanzapine treats schizophrenia and bipolar mania. It is highly effective but causes significant weight gain and metabolic syndrome. The metabolic side effects led to lawsuits and warnings. Olanzapine remains useful for patients who do not respond to other antipsychotics. It is also used for treatment resistant depression in combination with fluoxetine as Symbyax. The drug exemplifies the tradeoff between efficacy and side effects in psychiatric medications.
