Isoflurane
About Isoflurane
An inhaled general anesthetic. Isoflurane or Forane is a halogenated ether that maintains general anesthesia. It replaced older, more toxic anesthetics including ether and halothane. Isoflurane is safe and effective with rapid onset and recovery. It does not significantly sensitize the heart to adrenaline. The drug has been largely replaced by newer agents like sevoflurane and desflurane but remains important in veterinary medicine and resource limited settings. It is on the WHO essential medicines list.
