About Lidocaine

A local anesthetic that blocks nerve signals. Lidocaine or Xylocaine is the most widely used local anesthetic in medicine. It numbs tissue for minor procedures including dental work, wound repair, and skin surgery. Lidocaine is available as injection, topical gel, and patch. Intravenous lidocaine treats certain types of nerve pain and heart arrhythmias. The drug acts within minutes and lasts 30 to 60 minutes. EMLA cream combines lidocaine with prilocaine for numbing skin before needles.
