About Omeprazole
A proton pump inhibitor that dramatically reduces stomach acid production. Omeprazole or Prilosec was the first PPI and became one of the most prescribed drugs in the world. It treats GERD, stomach ulcers, and is part of H. pylori eradication therapy. Omeprazole is available over the counter. Long term use may reduce absorption of vitamin B12, calcium, and magnesium. Concerns about associations with bone fractures, pneumonia, and kidney disease have been raised but the drug remains generally safe.
