About Acarbose

A medication that delays carbohydrate absorption in the intestine. Acarbose treats type 2 diabetes by inhibiting alpha glucosidase enzymes in the gut, slowing the breakdown of starches and sugars. This reduces post meal blood sugar spikes. Acarbose is popular in Asia but less used in Western countries. The main side effects are gas and bloating from undigested carbohydrates reaching the colon. The drug does not cause hypoglycemia or weight gain.
