About Alirocumab

A PCSK9 inhibitor that dramatically lowers LDL cholesterol. Alirocumab or Praluent treats patients with familial hypercholesterolemia or those who cannot reach cholesterol targets on statins. PCSK9 inhibitors are monoclonal antibodies given by subcutaneous injection. They can lower LDL by 50 to 60 percent on top of statins. The ODYSSEY OUTCOMES trial showed reduced cardiovascular events. PCSK9 inhibitors are expensive, limiting access. Insurance often requires prior authorization. The discovery of PCSK9 as a drug target came from studying families with unusually low cholesterol and low heart disease rates.
