About Bevacizumab

A monoclonal antibody that cuts off tumor blood supply. Bevacizumab or Avastin targets VEGF, a protein that stimulates blood vessel growth. By blocking VEGF, bevacizumab starves tumors of nutrients and oxygen. It treats colorectal cancer, lung cancer, glioblastoma, and is used off label for age related macular degeneration when injected into the eye. Bevacizumab was the first anti angiogenic therapy approved for cancer. Side effects include bleeding, blood clots, and protein in urine. It demonstrates how targeting the tumor environment, not just the cancer cells, can be effective.
