About Amphotericin B

A powerful antifungal known as amphotericin or by its nickname Ampho-terrible due to severe side effects. Amphotericin B treats the most serious fungal infections including cryptococcal meningitis, systemic candidiasis, and mucormycosis. It works by binding to ergosterol in fungal cell membranes, creating pores that kill the fungus. Kidney damage is the main side effect. Liposomal formulations reduce toxicity. Despite being nearly 70 years old, amphotericin B remains the gold standard for severe fungal infections and is on the WHO essential medicines list.
