About Fluconazole

A triazole antifungal medication. Fluconazole or Diflucan treats yeast infections including vaginal candidiasis, oral thrush, and systemic candidiasis. It also treats cryptococcal meningitis, a deadly fungal infection of the brain that affects HIV patients. Fluconazole is well absorbed orally and crosses the blood brain barrier. The drug is generally well tolerated. Resistance has increased with widespread use, particularly in HIV patients receiving long term fluconazole. Fluconazole is on the WHO essential medicines list.
