About Ampicillin

A broad spectrum penicillin that treats a wide range of bacterial infections. Ampicillin treats meningitis, endocarditis, and infections caused by Listeria and Enterococcus. It was one of the first broad spectrum penicillins, extending penicillin activity beyond gram positive bacteria. Ampicillin is given orally or intravenously. It is combined with sulbactam as Unasyn to overcome beta lactamase resistance. Ampicillin is on the WHO essential medicines list and remains important for neonatal sepsis and meningitis, particularly in developing countries.
