Bacitracin
About Bacitracin
A topical antibiotic used in over the counter ointments for minor cuts and scrapes. Bacitracin is produced by Bacillus licheniformis bacteria, originally classified as Bacillus subtilis. The name comes from Margaret Treacy, a patient from whose tissue the bacteria were isolated. Bacitracin works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It is too toxic for systemic use but is excellent as a topical ointment. Often combined with polymyxin B and neomycin in triple antibiotic ointment.
