About Budesonide
An inhaled corticosteroid with excellent safety profile. Budesonide or Pulmicort treats asthma and inflammatory bowel disease. For asthma, it is used as a controller inhaler. Budesonide has high first pass metabolism, meaning swallowed drug is inactivated, reducing systemic side effects. It has been extensively studied in children and in pregnancy. For Crohns disease, delayed release formulations deliver budesonide directly to the intestine. It is on the WHO essential medicines list.
