Prednisone
About Prednisone
A synthetic corticosteroid that mimics cortisol. Prednisone treats a vast range of inflammatory and autoimmune conditions including asthma, arthritis, lupus, and transplant rejection. It was revolutionary when introduced in the 1950s, transforming previously untreatable conditions. Short term use is generally safe, but long term use causes serious side effects including osteoporosis, diabetes, weight gain, and increased infections. After prolonged use, abrupt withdrawal can cause adrenal insufficiency, so courses are typically tapered under medical supervision.
