Capecitabine
About Capecitabine
An oral chemotherapy prodrug that converts to fluorouracil in the body. Capecitabine or Xeloda treats breast cancer and colorectal cancer. It allows cancer treatment at home with oral tablets instead of intravenous infusion. Capecitabine is activated preferentially in tumor tissue, potentially reducing toxicity to healthy cells. Side effects include hand foot syndrome, a painful peeling of palms and soles. The drug has replaced IV fluorouracil for many indications, improving patient convenience and quality of life during cancer treatment.
