About Carbamazepine

A first line medication for partial seizures and trigeminal neuralgia. Carbamazepine or Tegretol treats seizures, nerve pain, and bipolar disorder. It was the first medication effective for trigeminal neuralgia, a severe facial pain condition. Carbamazepine works by blocking sodium channels. It induces liver enzymes, causing many drug interactions including reduced effectiveness of birth control pills. The drug can cause a serious skin reaction in patients with the HLA B1502 allele, common in Asian populations.
