About Valproic Acid

A broad spectrum antiseizure medication also used for bipolar disorder and migraine prevention. Valproic acid or Depakote treats absence seizures, tonic clonic seizures, and bipolar mania. It works by increasing GABA levels in the brain. Valproic acid causes birth defects including spina bifida, and its use in pregnancy is heavily restricted in many countries. Other side effects include weight gain, liver toxicity, and pancreatitis. Despite risks, it remains one of the most effective antiseizure medications available.
