About Gabapentin

A medication originally developed for seizures but now primarily used for nerve pain. Gabapentin or Neurontin treats neuropathic pain including diabetic neuropathy and postherpetic neuralgia. It also treats seizures as an adjunct therapy. The exact mechanism is unclear but involves calcium channel modulation. Gabapentin has been widely prescribed off label for many conditions. Concerns about abuse and misuse have increased, with some patients using it recreationally for sedation. It is one of the most prescribed medications in the US.
