About Cefepime

A fourth generation cephalosporin with broad spectrum activity. Cefepime or Maxipime treats hospital acquired pneumonia, febrile neutropenia, skin infections, and urinary tract infections. It covers both gram positive and gram negative bacteria including Pseudomonas. Cefepime is given intravenously. In 2012, the FDA issued a warning about neurological side effects including encephalopathy, particularly in patients with reduced kidney function. Despite warnings, cefepime remains a workhorse antibiotic for serious hospital infections.
