About Ceftriaxone

A third generation cephalosporin and one of the most used antibiotics in hospitals. Ceftriaxone or Rocephin treats pneumonia, meningitis, gonorrhea, urinary tract infections, and intra abdominal infections. Its long half life permits infrequent dosing. Ceftriaxone is given intravenously or intramuscularly. It is the treatment of choice for gonorrhea as resistance has eroded most other options. The drug crosses the blood brain barrier, making it effective for meningitis. Ceftriaxone is on the WHO essential medicines list and is a workhorse of hospital medicine.
