A medication that lowers calcium levels by sensitizing calcium sensing receptors in the parathyroid gland. Cinacalcet or Sensipar treats secondary hyperparathyroidism in kidney disease and primary hyperparathyroidism. It reduces parathyroid hormone production, lowering blood calcium. Cinacalcet provides a medical alternative to parathyroid surgery for some patients. The drug can cause low calcium levels, which can be dangerous. It is expensive and typically reserved for patients who are not candidates for surgery.
