About Ciprofloxacin

A fluoroquinolone antibiotic with broad spectrum activity. Ciprofloxacin gained fame during the 2001 anthrax attacks as the treatment of choice for anthrax exposure. It treats urinary tract infections, respiratory infections, and gastrointestinal infections. Ciprofloxacin works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase. FDA warnings highlight risks of tendon rupture, neuropathy, and mental health side effects. Despite warnings, it remains an important antibiotic for serious infections.
