Clopidogrel
About Clopidogrel
An antiplatelet medication that prevents blood clots in arteries. Clopidogrel or Plavix treats patients after heart attacks and strokes, and those with stents. It works by inhibiting the P2Y12 platelet receptor. Clopidogrel is a prodrug activated by liver enzymes. Some patients are poor metabolizers and get reduced benefit. The drug is widely used in dual antiplatelet therapy with aspirin after stent placement. It is inexpensive and widely available.
