About Colchicine

One of the oldest medications still in use, derived from the autumn crocus plant. Colchicine treats acute gout attacks by inhibiting microtubule formation in inflammatory cells, reducing inflammation. It has been used for gout since ancient Egyptian times. Colchicine also treats pericarditis and is being studied for cardiovascular disease prevention. The drug has a narrow therapeutic window. Overdose causes severe gastrointestinal symptoms and can be fatal. Despite toxicity, colchicine remains the standard treatment for acute gout.
