About Cyclosporine

A calcineurin inhibitor that revolutionized organ transplantation. Cyclosporine or Sandimmune prevents organ rejection by suppressing T cell activation. Discovered in a soil sample from Norway in 1969, cyclosporine dramatically improved transplant survival rates. After its introduction, one year kidney graft survival rose substantially. The drug can cause kidney damage, high blood pressure, and increased infection risk. It is also used for psoriasis and other autoimmune conditions.
