Tacrolimus
About Tacrolimus
A calcineurin inhibitor more potent than cyclosporine. Tacrolimus or Prograf prevents organ transplant rejection and treats severe eczema as a topical ointment. Discovered in a soil sample from Japan in 1984, tacrolimus is now the primary immunosuppressant for most transplant programs. It can cause kidney damage, diabetes, and neurological effects. Topical tacrolimus or Protopic treats eczema without the skin thinning of topical steroids. The drug requires careful blood level monitoring.
