Mycophenolate
About Mycophenolate
An immunosuppressant that inhibits purine synthesis in lymphocytes. Mycophenolate or CellCept prevents organ transplant rejection and treats autoimmune conditions including lupus nephritis. It selectively targets lymphocytes because these cells depend on de novo purine synthesis. Mycophenolate has replaced azathioprine in most transplant protocols. Side effects include gastrointestinal problems, low blood counts, and increased infection risk. The drug is teratogenic and contraindicated in pregnancy.
