Dabigatran
About Dabigatran
The first direct oral anticoagulant or DOAC. Dabigatran or Pradaxa treats atrial fibrillation and blood clots. It directly inhibits thrombin, the final enzyme in the clotting cascade. Dabigatran was the first alternative to warfarin in over 50 years. Unlike warfarin, it requires no blood monitoring. The specific reversal agent idarucizumab or Praxbind was approved in 2015. Dabigatran has a higher risk of gastrointestinal bleeding than warfarin. It remains an important option despite newer DOAC competitors.
