Dapsone
About Dapsone
A medication originally developed for leprosy that is now used for multiple skin conditions. Dapsone or DDS treats leprosy by killing Mycobacterium leprae. It also treats dermatitis herpetiformis, a blistering skin condition linked to celiac disease. Dapsone is used as a second line treatment for acne. The drug can cause hemolytic anemia, particularly in patients with G6PD deficiency, a genetic condition common in populations from malaria endemic regions. Despite being over 70 years old, dapsone remains essential for leprosy treatment and is on the WHO essential medicines list.
