Daptomycin
About Daptomycin
A cyclic lipopeptide antibiotic active against resistant gram positive bacteria. Daptomycin or Cubicin treats MRSA skin infections and bloodstream infections. It works by disrupting the bacterial cell membrane through calcium dependent binding. Daptomycin cannot treat pneumonia because lung surfactant inactivates it. The drug is given intravenously. Muscle toxicity including rhabdomyolysis is a potential side effect, and creatine phosphokinase levels are typically monitored. Daptomycin provides an alternative to vancomycin for resistant infections.
