About Digoxin

A cardiac glycoside derived from the foxglove plant. Digoxin treats heart failure and controls heart rate in atrial fibrillation. It works by inhibiting the sodium potassium ATPase, increasing heart muscle contraction force. Digoxin was first isolated in 1930 from Grecian foxglove, and William Withering described the use of foxglove for dropsy in 1785. The drug has a narrow therapeutic window and can cause toxicity including nausea, visual disturbances, and fatal arrhythmias. Blood levels are commonly monitored during treatment.
