Erythromycin
About Erythromycin
A macrolide antibiotic discovered in a soil sample from the Philippines. Erythromycin was the first macrolide, originally produced by Streptomyces erythreus. It treats respiratory infections, skin infections, and is an alternative for penicillin allergic patients. Erythromycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis. It has significant drug interactions because it inhibits CYP3A4 liver enzyme. Azithromycin and clarithromycin are improved derivatives.
